Lightning Mapping

Of course it is not essential to have your own detector despite it being very useful in alerting to danger. in the locality. If you want to see the progress or short term movement of storms there are websites which are hooked up into national and international detectors. These are plotted on maps to give a short history of strikes so that you can see how they are moving over a much larger area than a single detector can track. One difficulty with just a single detector is that it can identify a stroke but not the distance and direction with any accuracy but multiple time of arrival systems aggregated together can.

Mapping Sites

There are two which i use and they are:-

The former is a professional weather site, the second is not commercial but achieves its professional quality by subscription and advertising. The second is the one I use most because it is real time. The former also shows rainfall as well as the lightning. There are other websites of course but i don't use those. Of course if you are outside the UK there are localised sites for you.
The data on this site is for information only as accuracy cannot be guaranteed.
It is not to be used where life or limb may be compromised.
